BRAIN HEALTH Greetings from the Elementary School Counselor’s Office! September is Suicide Awareness month, so the elementary school is focusing on Brain Health. Keeping our brains healthy can help us to feel happier. According to research, some things we can do to keep our brains healthy include: • Eat Healthy Foods. Home-cooked meals made with fresh products from the food groups (meat, dairy, grain, fruits, vegetables) are the best. Some foods that help to boost brain power are fish, whole grains, and berries. Fast foods and processed foods (frozen pizza, chicken nuggets, chips, candy) contain a lot of unhealthy fats that cause inflammation which has been linked to anxiety and depression in past studies. • Stay Hydrated. Water helps brain cells communicate with each other, clears out toxins and waste that impairs brain function, and carries nutrients to your brain. Staying hydrated has been linked to quicker decision making and improved performance on tests. • Stay Physically Active. Exercise can help us think, learn, and problem-solve. Exercise also increases dopamine and serotonin levels in our brain; these help our body to feel good and happy. • Decrease the use of electronics and cell phones. Television programs, video games, games on cell phones, etc. are designed to be addictive and stimulating to the primitive brain; connections to higher order thinking get switched off. Elementary students should be limited to 1 hour of screen time daily. Teens should have no more than 2 hours of screen time daily. Kids who spend hours may develop hyper-reactive brains. They may become more easily distracted in school and may become lazy because the brain connection they need for thinking and processing in school has been disrupted. • Encourage imaginative play. Encourage kids to play outside. Nature can have a calming effect on the brain. Imaginative play stimulates the brain to develop connections between the nerve cells. These connections are what help students develop gross motor skills (coordination) and fine motor skills (writing, detailed work). • Create a warm and emotionally stable home. When students’ brains are able to remain calm, they can develop good executive functioning skills and remain in the thinking part of the brain instead of being triggered into the reacting part of the brain. • Get adequate Sleep. Children ages 6-13 need 9 to 11 hours of sleep per night. Teens ages 14-17 need 8 to 10 hours of sleep per night. Sleep impacts children’s memory, ability to pay attention, and ability to problem-solve and make decisions. It is while children sleep that the things they learned during the day set to memory. Without adequate sleep, this may not happen. • Spend time with Family and Friends. Socializing helps you to not feel lonely. It also helps to keep your memory sharp and helps with cognitive skills. Socializing increases your sense of happiness and well-being. A HEALTHY BRAIN IS A HAPPY BRAIN!

However, interruption of classroom processes to confer with a teacher or a student is forbidden without permission from school administration. Parents/Guardians, who are picking up their children at the end of the day, will check in at the front desk and wait for their child. GREETINGS FROM THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL COUNSELOR Hello! My name is Lori Tremayne, and I am the elementary school counselor. I am the daughter of Roger and Kathy (Gill) Mast, both graduates of Winnebago High School (1962 and 1967). I have been married to my husband, Randy, for 26 years. We have 2 sons who are both married. Our oldest son is a Dodge County Deputy and our youngest is a Math teacher. On August 13, we welcomed our first grandchild, a sweet baby girl. I graduated from Homer Community School in 1989. In 1993, I earned a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Wayne State College. In 2005, I earned a Master’s Degree in K-8 School Counseling. In 2015, I completed an endorsement in 9-12 School Counseling. Finally, in 2017, I completed an endorsement in PreK-12 School Administration, all from Wayne State College. My interests outside of school include scrapbooking, camping, baking/cooking, gardening and canning. I am so fortunate to have had a mom and grandma who gardened and canned and taught me so many different things. I have been an educator for 30 years. This is my 25th year of employment with Winnebago Public Schools. During my time here, I have been a 5th/6th grade teacher, a Jr. High Science teacher, an elementary school counselor, a high school counselor, and most recently, the 7-12 principal. Although I truly appreciate the opportunity I’ve had to work with students at all grade levels and in so many different capacities, I am extremely excited to return to working as an elementary school counselor again. If you have concerns and would like me to work with your child, please don’t hesitate to contact me. I look forward to working with the students of Winnebago in this new capacity! Respectfully, Lori Tremayne Email: ltremayne@winnebagok12.org Phone: 402-878-2224, Ext. 423
