On Saturday, February 8, the speech team traveled to its first meet in Homer. Fourteen students traveled with the team and ten performed. Each performer went through three rounds for each event. The results from the first 3 rounds were then tabulated to determine which students would advance to the finals. Winnebago sent three to the final round. “I was so happy to see our speakers break finals,” said Coach Brasch, “our speakers generally do well, but we don’t see this many in finals this early in the season.” The three students who advanced were: Toby Bassette in poetry, Mia Regalado in impromptu, and Angel Frenchman in entertainment speaking. Other students who performed were Gitana McClelland in oral interpretation of drama (OID), Alex George in  OID, Lily Brown in humorous prose, Mia Regalado in persuasive speaking, and Tasia Walker in serious prose. “Those that didn’t break finals did really well often ranking one or two spots out,” coach Brasch added, “We had a lot of superior rankings.” When final tallies were in, Toby would come home with a first-place medal, Mia with a second-place medal, and Angel with a sixth-place medal. “Considering there were nearly twenty people entered in each event, ranking in the top six is quite an accomplishment,” said Brasch. The speech team travels to Wakefield on Valentine’s Day to compete in their annual “Sweet Meet.”
