The Little Priest Warriors basketball team has started a new reading program where they visit WPS classes and read stories to children. They came to classes last week on October 19th and hope to continue reading to kids throughout the school year.
The idea for the program came from Keith Hanks Sr., who currently works at Little Priest Tribal College. When asked about why he implemented the program, he said, “I do this at every school,” he continued, “We want the community to see that our athletes are true student athletes. We don’t want the younger kids to think we just play ball, but rather have them understand that you have to be good students as well.” They plan to return to WPS twice in November and again in December. The men’s basketball team will be back on November 2nd, the women’s on the 23rd and then both on December 7th. On each day they’re back, they’ll visit the Kindergarten at 2:00 p.m., 1st grade at 2:20 p.m., and 2nd grade at 2:40 p.m.
He also mentioned the teams will be holding a free basketball camp on November 4th and will be doing activities with the elders in the community. For more information on this, ask Keith Hanks Sr.
