The Winnebago Lady Indians Basketball season is officially over and there are some highlights to share.  The girls finished with a record of 10-11 and came up one point short in subdistricts of defeating then #4 Ponca.

Most notably, Senior forward Kay Earth finished her outstanding career, tallying over 600 points and over 400 rebounds during her time with the team.  One of her highlights this year was a last second deep three from the wing that tied the game against Lower Brule and sent it into overtime.  The shot was probably the best of the season for the Lady Indians as it was a high arching effort that swished through the net as the final buzzer sounded.

Other seniors that helped lead the team this year were co-captain Alex Neff, who was a constant thorn in the side of opposing offenses, foward Dalyn Zagurski, who provided valuable minutes as a rebounder and inside defender, and sharp shooter Shaylee Kearnes, who made some timely shots and hustled every chance she got.  These girls provided a strong foundation and will be missed next year.

The Lady Indians have a lot to look forward to next year, with four returning starters, a number of bench contributors and a large crop of incoming freshman.  Dual point guard threats Jayla Price and Natasha Deal return to lead the frontcourt, while defensive juggernaut and three point shooter Tia Yellow Thunder and inside-outside threat Madeline Cleveland all return to provide some serious talent to the squad.  A constant double-double waiting to happen, Keisha Snyder also returns to provide an inside presence.

Coach Treivan Bear, in his first year, led the team as a focused unit.  The girls were united in their purpose for the season and a strong foundation has been set.  Coach Bear commented, “I’m very proud of how the girls came together towards the end of the season and showed just how dangerous our team can be when we play together.”  On next year’s expectations, Coach Bear added, “If the players push each other this off season, get in the weight room, and buy into what we are aiming to build, mark my words, next year we will be where we want to be.”  It is safe to assume that means a trip to Lincoln in March.

Congratulations
