Alumni Spotlight: Marquel Harlan by Amarae Rice

Maquel Harlan graduated as the valedictorian of the class of 2014 at Winnebago Public Schools. After high school, she went to Briar Cliff University and graduated in 2019 with Cum Laude Honors with her  Bachelors of Arts in Psychology and Sociology. Marquel currently lives in Winnebago. She works in the school as a liaison and has been here for 2 years. She has a one-year-old named Mila Blackhawk. Marquel is also in a committed relationship with her high school sweetheart Levi Blackhawk. In high school,  Marquel participated in: volleyball, basketball, cheerleading, track, speech, one-act play, student council, and lastly the National Honor Society. Her best memories from high school are traveling to basketball tournaments, hanging out with friends, and making memories while participating in the school activities she was in, signing her letter of intent for basketball, and going to state for pole vault. Her favorite teachers were Mr. Feight, Mr. Ladue, Mrs. Brasch, Mr. Bonneanu, Ms. Palmer, Mr. James, and Mr. Mette. Maquel says “My least favorite subject was math.  I liked everything else” her favorite subject would be English.” In her free time, she likes to spend time with her daughter and family, be outdoors, go fishing,  and play basketball and softball. Her advice for high school students today is, “ Be involved in as many high school activities as possible. Participate in class and listen to your parents/grandparents. And no matter what you do, always be genuine and purposeful, everything happens for a reason and everything comes full circle.”
